At Knyota Drinks, we sell and taste many different non-alcoholic sparkling wines - they are often among some of our best sellers. So, let’s dive into everything you need to know about this delightful beverage (read until the end to hear about some of our personal favourites!)
What is Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine?
Non-alcoholic sparkling wine is a carbonated beverage that mimics the taste, texture, and appearance of traditional sparkling wine but contains little to no alcohol (typically less than 0.5% ABV). It’s made using similar methods as regular sparkling wine, but the alcohol is removed through advanced techniques like vacuum distillation or reverse osmosis.
The result? A bubbly, refreshing drink that’s perfect for any occasion. In our experience, we tend to find that NA sparkling wines are among the best imitations of traditional wine. A big part of this is the effect of the bubbles, which sit on and then scrub the palette in a very similar way to most alcoholic sparkling wines.
During the many tastings we have done at the store, we often hear people tell us they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between alcoholic or NA sparkling wine! For this reason, if you are just getting into the world of non-alcoholic wine, we recommend you start with a sparkling option.
A Brief History of Sparkling Wine
Sparkling wine has a rich history dating back centuries. The most famous variety, Champagne, originated in the Champagne region of France in the 17th century. Legend has it that Dom Pérignon, a Benedictine monk, accidentally discovered the méthode champenoise (Champagne method) while trying to prevent his wines from fermenting in the bottle.
Today, sparkling wine is produced worldwide, with regions like Italy (Prosecco) and Spain (Cava) offering their own unique styles.
Non-alcoholic sparkling wine is a relatively modern innovation, driven by the increasing demand for alcohol-free alternatives. Advances in technology have made it possible to create non-alcoholic versions that retain the complexity and flavor of traditional sparkling wines.
How is Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine Made?
The process of making non-alcoholic sparkling wine is very similar to that of traditional sparkling wine, with one key difference: the removal of alcohol. Here’s a breakdown of how it’s made:
-
Fermentation: Grapes are harvested, crushed, and fermented to produce a base wine.
-
Carbonation: The base wine is carbonated to create the signature bubbles.
-
Dealcoholization: The alcohol is removed using methods like vacuum distillation or reverse osmosis.
-
Bottling: The final product is bottled and ready to enjoy!
The dealcoholization process is crucial, as it ensures the wine retains its flavor profile while removing the alcohol content. Over the years, the technology has evolved to be a lot more sensitive with the wine - with the goal of removing alcohol without stripping the aroma and flavour. Trust us, this is not "sparkling grape juice" in the slightest.
Why Choose Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Wine?
Non-alcoholic sparkling wine is more than just a trend—it’s a lifestyle choice.
It allows you to enjoy the ritual and sophistication of sparkling wine without the alcohol, making it a great option for a variety of situations.
Whether you’re toasting at a wedding, celebrating a milestone, or simply winding down after a long day, non-alcoholic sparkling wine offers a guilt-free way to indulge.
